स्वामी विवेकानंद जी विदेश यात्रा पर थे, उस समय उनकी पहचान एक धनवान महिला से हुई तो वह स्वामी जी के विचारों से इतना प्रभावित हुई कि वह उनकी शिष्या बन गई।
स्वामी जी एक दिन अपनी नई शिष्या के साथ घोड़ा गाड़ी में कहीं जा रहे थे। रास्ते में एक जगह गाड़ी वाले ने गाड़ी रोकी। वहां एक महिला कुछ बच्चों के साथ बैठी हुई थी। गाड़ी वाला उस महिला और बच्चों के पास पहुंचा। बच्चों को प्यार किया और महिला को कुछ रुपए देकर लौट आया।
गाड़ी में बैठे स्वामी जी और वह शिष्या ये सब बड़े ध्यान से देख रहे थे। जब गाड़ी वाला वापस गाड़ी में आया तो महिला शिष्या ने पूछा, ‘आप किससे मिलने गए थे, वह महिला और बच्चे कौन हैं?
गाड़ी वाले ने कहा, ‘वह मेरी पत्नी और बच्चे हैं। मैं एक बैंक में मैनेजर था, मेरे पास पैसों की कोई कमी नहीं थी। जब बैंक को नुकसान हुआ तो मुझ पर कर्ज बहुत ज्यादा बढ़ गया। मेरी पूरी संपत्ति बिक गई और हम इस हालत में पहुंच गए हैं कि हमारे रोज के खर्च के लिए भी पैसा नहीं बचा है। जो कमाई इस गाड़ी से होती है, उससे से जीवन चल रहा है। हमने छोटा सा घर ले रखा है। मैं लगातार मेहनत कर रहा हूं, जैसे ही मेरा वक्त थोड़ा ठीक होगा, मैं एक नया बैंक फिर से खोलूंगा और इस बार कोई गलती नहीं करूंगा।’
विवेकानंद जी उस गाड़ी वाले की बातें सुनकर बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने अपनी शिष्या से कहा कि ये व्यक्ति एक दिन अपना लक्ष्य जरूर प्राप्त करेगा। जो लोग इतने बुरे समय में भी धैर्य रखते हैं, खुद पर भरोसा रखते हैं, वे एक दिन अपना लक्ष्य जरूर हासिल कर लेते हैं।
